About Me

Howdy! I’m Anoop.

I am a mechanical engineer working as a research scientist at Rice University. I study fluid mechanics, soft robotics, and textile-based wearables for assistive applications.

Thank you for stopping by my website; I hope you enjoy reading about my interests and the research I do. Any views expressed here are my own.

I was born in Kerala, India, and currently live in Houston, Texas, USA.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. In 2015, I moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts to join the graduate program in mechanical engineering at MIT. I received a Master’s degree from MIT in 2017, and a doctoral degree in 2020, supervised by Prof. Gareth McKinley. For my dissertation, I studied the use of plant-based polymers and water-repellent surfaces for reducing frictional losses in turbulent flows.

In the fall of 2020, I moved to Houston and joined Rice University as a junior fellow in the Rice Academy of Fellows. At Rice, I work with Prof. Daniel Preston to build textile-based robotic wearables and air-powered assistive devices for people with mobility limitations. My research interests include soft materials, elastomers, liquid-repellent surfaces, and modeling thermofluidic systems.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading short fiction, watching movies, and playing the violin.
